The Grand Section

One of the first areas designed on the Eastern side of Wildwood, the Grand Section was laid out to ensure destitute citizens had a place to be buried. Originally called the “Poor Grounds”, the Grand Section houses notable individuals.

Itaro Kono

Part of P. T. Barnum’s travelling circus, Itaro Kono practiced martial arts and established one of the first dojos in America. During their travels Kono fell ill and was abandoned in Williamsport. He now rests in our hallowed grounds.

Mary and James Henry Willis

Mary Willis is buried at Wildwood but her husband, James Henry Willis, is unfortunately not; James, the last surviving African-American Civil War soldier, is buried in New Jersey but was to be buried with his wife. It is our hopes someday the two can be rejoined.
