Wildwood Cemetery is divided into two halves, East and West, each made up of multiple sections holding thousands of burials. A rediscovery by Mike DiRocco, working in partnership with Wildwood’s staff, brought to light an area of the grounds where unbaptized children had been buried in unconsecrated ground — a historical practice once common when infants who died before baptism could not be buried in consecrated Catholic ground.
The area has since been consecrated by the Catholic Church, formally recognizing this section as sacred ground alongside the rest of the cemetery.
Thanks to the generosity of donors who supported the memorial fund, a marker has since been placed to honor the children buried there, ensuring their resting place is properly recognized rather than forgotten.
If you have more information about this discovery, or about the children buried here, please contact us — we’d like to include it in Wildwood’s historical record.
